Dalgety Team Penning

Overview and Rules

A team consists of three riders, being Open and juniors competitors (under 17). Junior competitors cannot compete in the junior competition and Open competition at the same event. This includes fill in rides. They must choose one or the other. Each rider can only have a maximum of three paid runs. (This excludes the fill-in rule.)

Each team has a ninety second time limit to cut from the mob of 21 and yard three head of cattle with the same coloured collars. The cattle are identified by having coloured collars around their necks (like dog collars). After 60 seconds a warning bell/whistle will be sounded to indicate that there is only 30 seconds remaining till the end of the run.

After the team enters the arena they will wait at the foul/start line. The judge will then randomly draw a collar colour and advise the team. The time will start when the nose of the first competitorís horse crosses the start line. The team has 20 seconds to commence their run by crossing the line after the colour has been advised if not the clock will start and the announcer will advise that time is on.

The foul/start line is positioned approximately across the centre of the arena. All cattle must be on the mob side of the line and horses on the other before time begins.

No more than 5 head of cattle may be over the start line at any one time. If more than 5 head of cattle over the line the whistle will be blown & no time will be given for that team.

Once the team of riders have their 3 marked head of cattle over the foul/start line this is called claimed cattle. They must not allow any of the 3 marked head to return back over the foul/start line to the mob. If they do this is called lost cattle and may not be reclaimed. If only 1 or 2 head of marked cattle are over start line and cross back over they may be reclaimed only after all three head are over the start line at same time are they classed as claimed cattle. Riders may cross the foul/start line freely to block.

If one or two head crosses the centre line back to the mob the team may only yard the marked cattle that remain at the yard end of the start line.

Time may be called by any member of team by crossing gate of pen with horseís nose and no more than horseís shoulder by raising hand above shoulder.

All unmarked cattle must be on opposite side of side line and riders on yard side of start line before time is called.

If wrong cattle go into yard no horse is to enter yard, all drafting must be done outside the yard.

A team may call time with one, two or three head of cattle in pen. Teams with a time for penning three head of cattle will be placed higher than those with a time for two and those with two will be higher than those with one.

A team can call time only once.

Junior

Junior riders may yard 2 or 1 marked head of cattle and any other depending on committee. If given 2 head of marked cattle and any other. The 2 marked head must be yarded to receive a time. If given 1 head of marked cattle & 2 of any other. The 1 marked head must be yarded to receive a time.

Juniors are given same time as adults unless committee advise otherwise.

An adult safety rider is to be in the arena at all times while juniors are competing.

Apart from the number of marked cattle given to juniors the rules are the same as adults.

No time will be given if incorrect cattle are in the yard when time is called.

No rough handling or excessive speed.

The judge has the right to disqualify any competitor in breach of the rules.

No whips to be used on horses or cattle.

2nd Annual Team Penning and Snowy River Show Shear Day Results

Scuds of rain and a cold wind did not spoil the 2nd Annual Team Penning and Snowy River Show Shear day held at the Dalgety Showground last Saturday.

Dubbed as a horse sport for the whole family, more than 20 Team Penning teams, consisting of mums, dads, kids and friends had a great day, but more importantly, had some great fun as well.

Announcer, Lesley Clark from Adelong kept the competitors and the crowd informed about the ins and outs of team penning and provided advice for those who were attempting team penning and team sorting for the first time.

Also on the day was the Clover Leaf Barrel race with three riders competing simultaneously. Most of the team penners took part in the barrels races, racing flat-strap around each barrel. This proved a very exciting event for the many spectators who came to the Dalgety showground for a wonderful day out.

At the finish of the team penning event the judges decided there was enough time left to hold a team sorting event. Teams of two riders sorted beasts numbered from one to 10 in numerical order, from one yard to another. The judges decision was a very popular one with contestants enjoying the thrill of team sorting.

The Snowy River Show Shear competition attracted more than 20 shearers from around the south-east area and the challenge to be the best shearer on the day was huge.

MC, Wayne Peisley from Bombala had the spectators highly amused with his witty one-liners and kept the competition flowing along at a good pace.

At the presentation of prizes, Dalgety Show Society president, Richard Wallace firstly thanked Dalgety graziers, Brendon and Maryanne Rudd who generously provided the cattle for the team penning and team sorting events and the sheep for the Snowy River Show Shear competition. He then thanked all those who had got in and worked hard to make the day a great success and the competitors for coming to the day, and said the event would definitely be on again next year at a date to be announced. He also thanked the Snowy River Show Shear sponsors for their contributions to the success of the day.

The Dalgety Show Society committee was very pleased with the day.

The winner of the raffle, a Janneane Cahill painting, was won by Robin Daley with ticket number C37.
