Dalgety Team Penning 2014 Wrap Up

On the weekend of the 27th and 28th September 2014, the Dalgety Showground was abuzz with activity, playing host to three fantastic events, Team Penning, Show Shear Competition and Saddle Up Sunday. Competitors and spectators alike enjoyed the beautiful weather along with the fun, action packed atmosphere.

The kiosk, run by the Dalgety Show Society, cooked up a storm on the BBQs and as usual there was a plethora of delectable treats on offer.

A big thank you to all the volunteers who rallied together to pull off such a fantastic weekend, and a big thank you also to all the competitors who participated in the events.

Team Penning

The Dalgety Team Penning was held at the Dalgety Showground on Saturday 27th September.

The competition was fierce with 130 riders working in teams against the clock to pen selected cattle from a mob. As always, there were some excellent skills on display, watched keenly by an excited crowd of onlookers.

The winners of the open division were Scott Bradley, Lindsay Dowling and Dave Williams who took out the title and $1200 prize money with a time of 40:36 seconds. This was followed closely by second place holders Jack Rudd, Liz Fitzgerald, and Joe Green.

Competitors of all ages participated with the youngest competitor, Molly Aitchison aged 3 years, riding assisted in the sub-junior category with team members Jane Miners, Jack Miners and Tara Miners.

The junior category for riders aged between 9 and 17 years of age, was won by Danielle Baron, Megan McCraw and Olivia Baron with second place going to Sami Rudd, Jane Fitzgerald and Georgia Walters.

Another high achiever of the day was Beverly O’Ryan who was the recipient of the Stumpy Freebody Sportsmanship Award.

Show Shear Competition

Running alongside the Team Penning was the Show Shear Competition. Once again, the Thompson family from Dalgety put in a strong effort with Father and Son duo, Brett and Robert Thompson taking out first and second place in the Intermediate division. Brett Thompson also secured a double placing with a fourth in the Senior division, with Blake Thompson taking the Senior title. Not to be outdone their cousin Sammi-jo Thompson, better known for kid wrangling at Berridale Little Stars preschool, who came 4th in the novice section. GO GIRL POWER! We hope seeing Sammi-jo in there going toe to toe with the boys might encourage more female entrants for next year. Well done Sammi-jo!

Logan Brownlie from Bombala successfully defended his first place title in the Novice division, whilst Pat O’Ryan from Dalgety secured first place in the Open division.

This year the Quick Shear Competition was accompanied by a Wool Handling Competition with Peter Bodycott from Cooma showing everyone how it’s done, winning first place.

The Show Shear organisers would like to thank all of their sponsors for their contribution to the event including Hazeldean P/L, Gordon Litchfield Wool, AWI, Monaro Wool Services, Brownlie Bros Shearing, Buckleys Crossing Hotel, Warren and Frances Kimber, Peter and Michelle Ward, Top Fun Shearing, South East Rural, Cooma Rural, Elders Cooma, Conrayn Merino Stud, Manawa Merino Stud, Brett Thompson Excavations, Blake Thompson and Mary-Anne and Brendan Rudd.

Saddle Up Sunday

The Dalgety community put on another fantastic day on Sunday the 28th September with many returning to the showground with their horses for Saddle Up Sunday, a day of fun for all ages where competitors took part in a range of fun, gymkhana style events.

The major event of the day was the Stockman’s Challenge where riders put their horses through many different obstacles. This event was one by Dave Cochrane in the Open Division, Jane Fitzgerald in the under 17 division, Jack Miners in the 9 and under division and Isabel “Izzy” and older sister Darcy Wallace in the Assisted Challenge division. Dave “Georgie” Thompson, Jen O’Ryan, Steven Bootes and Harry O’Connor also received encouragement awards for their efforts.

The day went very well with 72 competitors from lead riders to open rides. It was great to see people coming to compete for their first time and enjoying themselves.

We would like to thank the sponsors for donating some excellent prizes including, John Shortt, Cooma Rural, South East Rural, Snowy Camping world, Elders, Landmark, Pat O’Ryan, Hazeldean P/L, Snowy Saddlery, Main Street, Office Play, Jindabyne Butchery and Bush Basics.
